Diego Marín on Scoring Film With Just a Guitar and a Loop Pedal

World of Musicians EditorialApr 28, 20268 min read

Guitarist and composer Diego Marín has scored three short films using little more than a classical guitar and a looping rig. He explains how constraint became his creative advantage.

Diego Marín didn't set out to become a film composer with a stripped-back rig — it happened out of necessity while working on a low-budget short film with no scoring budget at all.

"I had a guitar, a loop pedal, and two days," he recalls. "What I learned is that constraint forces you to find the emotional core of a scene instead of hiding behind arrangement."

That approach has become his signature — building tension and texture through live looping rather than layered studio production, often performing entire scores live in a single pass.

He now teaches a workshop on constraint-based scoring through World of Musicians, encouraging composers to work with deliberate limitations before reaching for a full orchestral template.
