We sat down with vocalist Amara Osei ahead of her Harmattan Nights anniversary tour to talk about staying true to Afro-soul roots while building a genuinely global fanbase.
Amara Osei's rise over the past three years has been a study in patience. Rather than chasing trend-driven sounds, she doubled down on the Afro-soul and jazz influences she grew up with — and watched her audience grow steadily across three continents.
"I used to think I had to sound like everyone else to get noticed," she told us. "The moment I stopped trying to fit a playlist and just made the record I actually wanted, that's when people started paying attention."
She credits much of her early traction to consistent live performance rather than paid promotion — something she now teaches younger artists through the World of Musicians mentorship program.
Her advice to artists just starting out: "Play everywhere that will have you for the first two years. Your sound gets sharper in a room with real people faster than it ever will in a studio alone."
